We are advised to eat well to shape our medical destinies for the better. Like it or not, we are all aging, a bit more each day. Since it is inevitable, why not make the best of it? Have you heard your elders say, “If I knew I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself!”

Healthy eating begins with fiber rich fruits and vegetables. These foods help us feel full with fewer calories, which keeps our weight down or allows us to lose some excess weight. Fruits and vegetables are also loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. Additional servings of fruits and vegetables helps us look and feel our best.

Artichokes are full of magnesium. Magnesium helps the body develop energy. Without enough energy, your muscles have to work harder. The artichoke is a nut flavored flower bud, and needs to be harvested while small and delicate. One artichoke has 50 – 60 calories, and can take quite a while to eat. It also contains 9 grams of fiber, 3 grams of protein, and 11 grams of carbohydrates.

Don’t undo the goodness of the artichoke with butter, sauces, or mayonnaise. Choose a dark green artichoke with tight leaves. Boil or steam with a splash of lemon juice.

Spinach is loaded with iron. Iron is key to red blood cells. Red blood cells fuel our muscles with oxygen for energy. Spinach has also been found to increase the energy production inside our cells. One cup of spinach has 30 calories, one gram of carbs, and 56% of daily vitamin A requirements. Spinach is also a great source of folate for cell health and growth. Spinach has beta carotene, an antioxidant that protects the cells, and vitamin K for blood and bone health

Asparagus is a great source of fiber, folate, A, C, E, and K vitamins, and chromium which helps insulin transport glucose from the body. Asparagus is loaded with antioxidants which help neutralize free-radicals and stop their cell damage. Grill some asparagus with a splash of olive oil and garlic.

Salmon is rich in omega – 3 fatty acids which block UV enzymes that cause sagging skin and lines. Want a smooth complexion? Have fish. Grill and serve it with vegetables, such as asparagus, artichokes, or a fresh spinach salad.

Berries of all kinds are delicious and fresh. Strawberries have antioxidants to protect the skin, vitamin C which helps prevent wrinkles and keeps skin moist. Blueberries help lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Studies have shown blueberries can improve memory on learning tests. Have blueberries to improve brain cell resilience, enhance learning, and protect memory. Berries are delicious whether fresh or quick frozen with no added sugar.

Beans are loaded with fiber, which can help your body feel satiated. Feelings of fullness signal the body to stop eating. Weight control becomes harder as we age. Fight it more easily with beans, which also help your digestion. The protein in beans helps you feel full longer, too.

Exercise is critical to aging well. Add exercise to your daily routine for at least 30 minutes. Drink lots of water. Stay active and involved. Enjoy every day of a long, healthy life, and be your best!

The Protein Power Diet claims that if you eat fewer carbohydrates and more protein, you will lose weight. You will also be healthier from eating the Protein Power Diet. The diet was first introduced in the 1990’s by Michael and Mary Dan Eades, both MD’s, and family practice doctors.

Carbohydrates cause the body to produce insulin. High levels of insulin inhibit the breakdown of fats. Lowering carbohydrate intake in the body keeps insulin levels low. This diet should lower the body’s insulin levels, which allows the body to burn fat, rather than store fat. High insulin levels have been shown to lead to high cholesterol and increased fluid retention. High insulin levels are related to diabetes, inflammation, accelerated aging, and may promote cancer development.

The Protein Power Diet takes dieters through steps to determine how much protein you will need per day. The steps assess lean body mass, body fat, and level of physical activity. Most dieters are allowed between 100 – 120 grams of protein each day.

Next, choose protein from a combination of fish, poultry, lean red meat, low fat cottage cheese, feta cheese, mozzarella, Muenster, tofu, and eggs.

The Protein Power Diet limits carbohydrates to 30 to 55 grams per day. If health problems need correcting, such as weight loss, 30 grams of carbohydrates will be the daily limit. Load up on allowed low carb vegetables such as leafy greens, tomatoes, peppers, asparagus, avocado, broccoli, celery, cucumber, eggplant, green beans, mushrooms, and zucchini.

Next, include 25 grams of fiber, healthy fats, olive oil, and nuts or seeds. Drink eight glasses of water daily. Surprise! You may have a glass of wine or beer, as long as you count the carbs. This may be enough to help you choose the Protein Power Diet! Coffee, tea, and diet soda are allowed.

Sample menus look like this:

Breakfast
Omelet of smoked salmon and cream cheese
Half cup of strawberries
One slice of buttered toast

1 poached egg
1 slice of buttered toast
1 ounce sausage

Lunch
Chicken salad
One half avocado
Salad of fresh greens

Tuna
Hard boiled egg
Pita bread
salad

Dinner
Lean meat
Steamed asparagus
Salad greens with tomato

Grilled salmon
Zucchini
Vegetable salad

If you decide to try the Protein Power Diet, learning the carbohydrate count in foods is very important. One simple method is to have two servings of carbs at each meal. Serving sizes would be as follows:

2 apricots

Half of an avocado

Half cup berries

2 cups broccoli

1 cup green beans

1 slice bread

The Protein Power Diet is a high protein and low carb diet which can help reduce hunger pangs, control overeating, and lead to weight loss. Lean body mass should be preserved with this diet.

As with any diet, the one you will follow is the one that will work. Meal planning is essential so that the allowed foods are available, and the forbidden foods are not. Learn what is a serving size, and stick to it. Add moderate exercise for at least thirty minutes most days. Check with your health care provider before making any major change to your diet.

Kale has been flying out of the bins in produce departments everywhere. Restaurants are featuring kale smoothies, wraps, pasta dishes, and kale with roasted chicken. Many people are eating it with reckless abandon. Can you have too much of a good thing? The answer is yes.

One of the many benefits of kale is that it has been shown to fight bladder, breast, colon, ovarian, and prostate cancers. Kale is full of antioxidants that reduce risks to cataracts, atherosclerosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Kale does a great job of binding bile acids, and excreting them from the body, lowering cholesterol. Kale has many anti-inflammatory benefits to the body as well.

Kale contains indole-3-carbinol, a nutrient that is important in how the body metabolized estrogen. Research shows it has a protective role in fighting breast cancer. It is sometimes used as a supplement for patients with breast cancer. Those who are concerned with estrogen related diseases such as fibroids, fibrocystic breast disease, endometriosis, or concerns with risks due to family history of these conditions, may want to eat kale as a natural way to obtain this nutrient.

Yet, all is not perfect with this new, wildly popular cruciferous vegetable. Kale is a power house of vitamin K. Vitamin K reduces overall risk to developing or dying from cancer. Vitamin K is vital to many bodily functions such as blood clotting, antioxidant activity, and building and maintaining bone health.

Heed warning, vitamin K can cause problems in many people. Patients taking warfarin or other anticoagulants should not eat kale, as the vitamin K may lead to drug interferences.

Kale also contains oxalates. Oxalates are naturally occurring substances found in plants and animals. Our bodies also convert foods into oxalates. One food our body readily converts is orange juice because it contains vitamin C.

Oxalates can interfere with the absorption of calcium. Avoid eating dairy products at the same meal with kale to avoid any problems. Oxalates have also been linked by some researchers to the development of kidney stones and some gall stones.

Raw kale is popular in salads, smoothies, and juicers. Kale has lots of fiber, and can aid with digestion and the detoxification of the body.

Raw kale can be hard on the digestive system. Too much can lead to bloating, gas, diarrhea, and other complications. Nutritionists caution that raw kale should be limited to not more than once or twice a week. Cooked kale can be enjoyed more.

Kale contains a compound that can affect the thyroid, and may suppress the thyroid function in some individuals.

We are frequently cautioned to consult with our health care providers before making any major change to our diets. This turns out to be excellent advice. One would think simply adding a new variety of vegetable would be good for us in every way. There can be hidden dangers to new foods, diets, or eating plans. Consult your health care professional before having large amounts of kale, or before having any if you suffer from a particular health condition.

Kale seems to be the new super food. It has become wildly popular lately, and everyone seems to be eating it. Kale has excellent nutritional qualities, superior health benefits, and many find it delicious. Some consider it the “Queen of Greens.” Kale is credited with protecting against cancer, and lowering cholesterol. Nearly all diets suggest eating a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and kale may be one you want to know more about.

Kale is a cruciferous vegetable, like cabbage, broccoli, collard greens, and Brussels sprouts. It is also known as borecole, and comes in many varieties.

Kale is loaded with fiber, and does a great job of binding with bile acids in your digestive system. The bile acids can then be excreted, and this helps lower cholesterol. Raw kale lowers cholesterol, but steamed kale does this job the best.

Kale contains isothiocyonates, produced from the breakdown of naturally found glocosinolates, and they have been shown to lower the risks to five types of cancer. These play a major role in detoxification of the body. Cancers include bladder, breast, colon, ovary, and protate, and the compounds help suppress the tumor proteins. Most cruciferous vegetables also contain these compounds.

Kale is loaded with more than 45 flavonoids which have strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Kale can help the body fight the suffering from oxidative stress, which can lead to cataracts, atherosclerosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Research scientists have observed the compounds in kale flowing into the bloodstream, where they can fight the oxidative stress.

The beautiful leaves of kale are in season from winter through to the beginning of spring. The earthy, flavorful leaves are becoming commonly available year round. Kale is even easy to grow, if you have a gardening interest.

When shopping, choose heads with firm, deeply colored leaves. Stems should appear moist and hardy. The leaves should look fresh and unwilted. Avoid kale with that looks yellow, brown, or that has holes. Smaller leaves will be more tender. Store it in the refrigerator wrapped in plastic with as much air removed as possible. Do not wash before storing, as this can harm the delicate leaves. Kale should keep for up to five days, and the fresher it is, the sweeter.

How to steam kale? Rinse the kale. Cut the leaves in ½ inch pieces, and the stems into ¼ inch lengths. Sprinkle with fresh lemon juice, if desired. Allow to rest five minutes. Fill the steamer with two inches of water, and bring to a boil. Add the kale, then steam for five minutes.
Try one of the following recipes for new and easy ways to implement kale in your diet.

Kale can be steamed with apples, and topped with balsamic vinegar and chopped walnuts.

Chop kale, and toss with whole grain pasta, feta, pine nuts, and olive oil.

Layer kale into your favorite lasagna recipe.

Braise kale with onion, bacon, diced apple, a splash of apple cider vinegar, and pepper.

Heat kale, chopped carrots, onions, and garlic, in a large skillet with a bit of olive oil. Add garbanzos and a hint of cumin. Top with a dollop of Greek yogurt.

Toss kale, frozen mango chunks, almond milk, and Greek yogurt into a blender for a quick and sweet smoothie.

Have you looked at the Three Day Diet, and thought, three days is a diet you can do, then turned your nose up at the limited food choices? Sometimes we read about a diet, and think it will work for us. After we read the meal plans, we disregard the entire diet as one we could never follow. After all, the only diet that will work is the one we will stick to. There are choices in the seemingly strict Three Day Diet.

One bonus of the Three Day Diet over other diet plans is that it only lasts for three days, and you could lose up to ten pounds. Critics feel that the weight loss is from loss of fluids, not fat, and may be unlikely to last. The calorie restrictions are intense, with only about 1000 calories included each day.

If the sample menus to the Three Day Diet are making you feel less than enthusiastic, know that there are allowable substitutes. There are foods you may substitute for the suggested meal plans. Find the foods that you enjoy, and fit them into your meal plan. No diet can be successful if you feel you are in a state of deprivation. That problem is exacerbated by cheating, and even binging. No one wants to sabotage their own diet because the portions are too small to fill them up, or they don‘t like the food choices.

What are some of the common substitutes on the Three Day Diet?

Instead of grapefruit, have another piece of fruit such as an orange or apple. Also drink one half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water half an hour before your meal.

Instead of a banana, you may have two apricots, two kiwis, or one cup of papaya.

Instead of toast, have five saltine crackers, two tablespoons of sunflower seeds, one half cup of whole grain cereal, half of a protein bar, or one half cup of a protein shake.

Instead of tuna, try tofu, cottage cheese, pumpkin seeds, two ounces of cooked chicken, thirty almonds, or thirty peanuts.

Instead of peanut butter, you may have another nut or seed butter. Nutella is not allowed.

Instead of hot dogs, have one half cup of lentils per hot dog. You may substitute bratwurst or veggie dogs.

Instead of egg, try 2 slices of bacon, one chicken wing, one cup of milk, or four tablespoons of nuts.

Instead of broccoli, have cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, or beets.

Instead of green beans, have lettuce, spinach, or tomatoes.

Instead of carrots, have a small salad, beets, bell peppers, or spinach.

Instead of apple, have pear, plum, grapes, peach, or nectarine.

Instead of cottage cheese or cheddar cheese, have two ounces of ham or two eggs.

The Three Day Diet is for three days. You can have your choice of food for the next four or five days, and then repeat the Three Day Diet. Be mindful to control portions, and make better food choices to ensure the weight you lose stays lost. Add exercise. Consult your health care professional before making any major change to your diet.

“Lose ten pounds in three days!”

“The only diet for people who want to lose a lot of weight!”

“Eat ordinary foods from your kitchen!”

“Eat normal meals at normal times!”

Have you heard of the Three Day Diet and these fantastic claims? What exactly is the Three Day Diet? This is a strict plan that you follow for three days, and you will lose weight quickly, cleanse your system, lower cholesterol, and have more energy. If you want to lose more weight after the three days, you are instructed to eat normally for 4 – 5 days, and repeat the three day diet.

The Three Day Diet is very specific in what foods to eat, and portions are strictly controlled. The combination of foods is designed to rev up the metabolism. The claim is that this diet should boost fat burning. The plan also includes drinking four cups of water or non calorie drinks each day.

Breakfast will include one of the following choices:

One half grapefruit, one slice of toast, one tablespoon of peanut butter, and one cup of black coffee, tea, or water.

One egg, one slice of toast, one banana, black coffee, tea, or water.

One slice cheddar cheese, five saltine crackers, one apple, black coffee, tea, or water.

Lunch will include one of the following choices:

One half can of water packed tuna, one slice of toast, and one cup of black coffee, tea, or water.

One cup of low fat cottage cheese, 5 saltine crackers, black coffee, tea, or water.

One hard boiled egg, one slice toast, black coffee, tea, or water.

Dinner will include one of the following choices:

Three ounces of any lean meat, one cup of green beans, one cup of carrots, one medium apple, one cup of ice cream, black coffee, tea, or water.

Two beef hot dogs, one half cup carrots, one banana, one cup broccoli or cabbage, one half cup vanilla ice cream, black coffee, tea, or water.

One cup water packed tuna, one cup carrots, one cup cauliflower, one cup melon, one half cup vanilla ice cream, black coffee, tea, or water.

The coffee or tea may be sweetened with Sweet and Low or Equal. Lemon juice, salt and pepper, mustard, lemon pepper seasoning, and sugar free mints and gum are also allowed.

The calorie count on the Three Day Diet is very low, including approximately 1,000 each day. You will lose weight at such a reduced caloric intake. Usually, dramatically reducing calorie intake will slow the metabolism, which then causes the body to gain more weight even more quickly after ending the diet.

Meal choices are monotonous, so luckily are only for three days. Better eating habits of a balanced, nutritious life style are not learned on the three day diet. Exercise is also not included, which should be a part of everyone’s healthy life style. Recommendations are to include at least thirty minutes of moderate exercise most days.

Three days of very limited eating followed by 4 – 5 days of old eating habits does not lead to long term weight loss. In order to lose weight and keep it off, dieters need to learn portion control, and develop new and better eating habits for daily living.

The promised ten pound weight loss in three days will most likely be fluid loss, not fat loss. The results, then, are unlikely to last.

Probiotics are living bacteria. They live naturally on foods that have been fermented. A normal human digestive system may contain up to 400 different types of probiotic bacteria to keep the system functioning regularly, and reduce the growth of harmful bacteria.

Probiotics are helpful and even necessary to the body for digestion, strengthening the immune system, and to help control colds and allergies. Probiotics are used to reduce the reoccurrence of bladder cancer, and have been used to prevent and reduce eczema in children.

Probiotics are considered food additives. Additives aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration for a variety of reasons. Doctors would be required to register food items with the FDA, and conduct tests on them. You would then need a prescription for common foods.

This can lead to claims by manufacturers or distributors that may not be entirely true. Consumers may not know what is the true value of probiotics. Foods may be advertised as containing probiotics, yet the levels or helpfulness of the additives can be confusing.

The best way to ensure your health is to learn all that you can. You are the most important element in determining your good health.

Prebiotics are non digestible carbohydrates that act as the food for probiotics. Include them in your diet for the probiotics to live and multiply. Yogurt and kefir, which are fermented dairy products, contain live bacteria, and the fuel for the bacteria to live. Have whole grains, bananas, garlic, onions, honey, and artichokes to include more prebiotics in your diet.

Bacteria come in billions of varieties. They can help relieve digestive upsets, diarrhea, allergies, colds, colic in infants, Candida or yeast infections, or irritable bowel syndrome.

Probiotics come in many varieties. You need to choose the probiotic to combat the condition you have. Over 300 probiotic choices are available, yet only 20 have been fully studied. If you want to treat Candida, or yeast infections, you would need to choose probiotics containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1, and Lactobacillus reuten GR-14. If you want to regulate your digestive system, you would choose Bifidobacterium animalis DN 117-001 which is commonly found in probiotic yogurt. Learn which probiotic is designed to improve your symptoms or condition.

Probiotic bacteria need to be alive. You will find probiotics in foods such as yogurt, kimchi, a fermented Korean cabbage dish, sauerkraut, sourdough bread, and kombucha, which is fermented tea. Look for fresh whole foods such as yogurt, fresh sauerkraut, and fresh kimchi. Sauerkraut or kimchi that is bottled has been cooked, and pasteurized, which kills the probiotic benefits.

Almost no side effects have been shown from the use of probiotics. Most adults can safely add them to their diets. While you may not need follow a probiotic diet, the additional microorganisms may help your digestion, and offer assistance to your good bacteria in protecting the body from harmful bacteria.

Check with your health care provider before adding supplements to your diet or making any drastic changes to your diet.

Probiotics are living bacteria found naturally in foods that have gone through a process of fermentation. These foods assist the digestive system by stimulating the natural digestive juices and enzymes to keep the digestive organs working properly. Probiotics have been shown to reduce lactose intolerance. They help control gas and diarrhea.

In addition to keeping the digestive system functioning properly, probiotic foods help build strength in the immune system, allowing the body to fight infections. Probiotics have been used to fight cancer and eczema.

Products labeled probiotic are not equally good for you, so look for words such as “live” and “active cultures.” Include some of the top probiotic foods in your diet.

Yogurt is one of the top probiotic foods, especially if it is live cultured. Look for brands that have added lactobacillus or acidophilus. Cheese and yogurt made from goat’s milk include the probiotics thermophillus, bifudus, bulgaricus, and acidophilus. Pass up any yogurt that includes high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, or artificial sweeteners.

Kefir is a combination of fermented goat’s milk and fermented kefir grains. Kefir is high in lactobacillus and bifidus as well as many antioxidants. This bubbly beverage has its own probiotic bacteria, and a few varieties of helpful yeast. Choose organic kefir.

Sauerkraut is extremely high in healthy live cultures. Sauerkraut has been shown to reduce symptoms of allergies. It is also high in vitamins A, B, C, and E. Kimchi is a Korean spiced and fermented cabbage. It is extremely spicy, yet very good for you. Sauerkraut has the probiotics leuconostoc, pediococcus, and lactobacillus. Choose unpasteurized products, because the pasteurization kills the active bacteria.

Miso soup is traditional in Japan. It is a staple for digestive regulation. Miso is made from fermented rye, beans, rice, and barley. Make a quick probiotic serving full of lactobacillus and bifidus by stirring one tablespoon of Miso in hot water.

Miso is nutrient dense, and fights the effects of environmental pollution. It helps control the alkaline level of the body, and may halt carcinogenic effects on the body. It contains more than 160 bacteria strains, is low in calories, includes many antioxidants, and is high in B vitamins.

Sourdough bread is often left out of diets, while searching for whole grain varieties. Have sourdough for the lactobacillus that can aid digestion.

Choose buttermilk or acidophilus milk, which is simply milk fermented with lactobacillus acidophilus.

Some soft cheeses are instrumental in carrying the probiotics through the gastrointestinal tract. The lactobacillus in some soft cheeses, such as Gouda, can make it through, and may boost the immune system.

Pickles are fermented cucumbers. They are an excellent source of probiotics. Sea salt and water solutions encourage digestive bacteria. Pickles are even easy to make at home to ensure freshness. Check out lacto fermented dill pickles which are made without vinegar. Pickles can help reestablish healthy probiotics after taking antibiotics.

Kombucha tea has been touted as excellent for the digestive system. Kombucha should increase your energy, enhance well being, and helps with weight loss.

Prebiotic foods are non digestible carbohydrates. They act as the food for probiotics. Include them in your diet for the probiotics to live and multiply. Choose asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, oatmeal, bananas, honey, maple syrup, beans, whole grains, and even red wine.

Consult your health care provider before adding supplements to your diet or making any drastic changes to your diet.

Thrush is a yeast infection caused by the Candida fungus. Candida is found on most people, and does not cause discomfort for most. Sometimes the balances in the body are thrown off from a lack of good nutrition, a recent round of antibiotics, or a weakened immune system. Thrush can affect anyone. It is most commonly found in young infants and older people who have more delicate systems.

Symptoms of thrush can include cracked lips, white patches around the mouth, the lips, tongue, on the gums, the roof of the mouth, or inside of the cheeks. It may even spread to the tonsils and back of the throat. The lesions may resemble cottage cheese. Attempts to remove it may lead to bleeding, and it cannot be wiped or scraped away. Sores may also develop at the corners of the mouth.

Infants may not feed well due to discomfort from thrush, which can make sucking uncomfortable. Thrush infections may be present as diaper rash at the same time. Infant thrush can cause also gas in a baby. Look also in the moist underarm and groin area for any unusual conditions.

Breast feeding mothers may have redness on the nipples from an infection of Candida on the skin. Mothers may want to use an antifungal cream on the nipples when not breast feeding. Tea tree oil can also be mixed with a small amount of olive oil or coconut oil and applied to nipple area. Cleanse the nipples thoroughly before and after feeding. Use nursing pads, and change them frequently.

If bottle feeding, thoroughly clean nipples, bottles, and pacifiers. Store bottles and formula in the refrigerator to prevent yeast from multiplying. These habits will help prevent reinfection. Frequent diaper changes and careful hand washing can also prevent the spread of thrush or Candida.

Yeast cannot live in an acidic environment. Some recommend rinsing the nipple area and baby’s bottom with a solution of half vinger to half water. Fill a spray bottle for a quick mist over baby’s bottom before fresh diapers.

Check with your doctor, who may prescribe medication such as oral Nystatin drops that will be spread onto the baby’s mouth with a cotton swab. The treatment is repeated after each feeding, and symptoms should disappear in two or three days. Depending on the age of the baby, yogurt with lactobacilli may be added to the diet.

Nursing mothers may want to follow a specific diet to cure oral thrush, such as the Candida diet. Nursing mothers should stick to the recommended Candida diet foods, and avoid foods such as mushrooms, pickled foods, deep fried foods, MSG or monosodium glutamate, smoked meats and fish, dried fruits, and yeast breads. Some avoid dairy products, wine, beer, and soda.

Follow good oral hygiene habits, brush twice a day and floss daily. Avoid mouthwashes and mouth sprays which can disrupt the balance in your mouth. Visit your dentist regularly, and ask how often you need to be examined.

If you smoke, quit. It is not good for you, your baby, and can make you susceptible to thrush, as well as a myriad of other conditions.

Always check with your doctor before making any changes to your diet or your baby’s diet.
