Starting A Diet

Before you invest weeks or months into your diet, it is important to take the proper steps to ensure your diet program will be successful.  Getting off on the right foot for your diet can be the difference between success, and failure.  With just a few simple steps you can dramatically increase your chances of hitting your weight loss goals.

There are a few initial steps to take which will get you excited to begin dieting and also serve as meaningful measurements along the way.  Here are a few steps to get you started.

1.)    Set a Start Date:  Determining a “hard-date” to start your diet is an important factor to success.  You want to get out of the habit of saying you’ll just start next week.  Take some time to sit down, go over the calendar to make sure starting a diet makes sense for your schedule, and circle the date to be prepared to get out of bed and start shaping your physique!

2.)    Determine Realistic Goals:  Too often people will try to lose 45 pounds in a month or 10 pounds in 48 hours.  Pick a realistic goal for yourself, which depending on your starting weight and diet experience is likely in the 2-5lbs per week range, and set that as a realistic target.

3.)    Identify Challenges: Identifying the hardest things to overcome and creating strategies to tackle them is an important step before a successful diet.  Are you prone to eating unhealthy snacks in the break room at work, gorging if you get depressed or have a bad day, or drinking too much high calorie soda?  Identify these problems and determine the solutions before you start.

4.)    Take Starting Weight and Pictures: It is important to step on the scale before you start to record starting measurements.  It is also highly effective to take starting pictures.  These will serve as a useful measurement as you progress through the diet as well as giving a frame of reference for where you’ve come from once you successfully accomplish your goals.

5.)    Track Your Weight and Pictures:  Taking a weight measurement and pictures once per week throughout the duration of your diet is important to track progress and also help you to make the accurate adjustments along the way.
